Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21st, 2012 that Coleman was going to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other actors left the show. Moffat selected her for the role because she is the most effective in her interactions with Smith and was able to speak faster than him.
